Blog Post #1- Artist Statement

Hello! My name is Colleen Digney and I'm currently a media studies major with a minor in political science at Hunter College. When I first started school I was always set on being a media major, but did not plan on having a minor. As I started taking various media courses I began to realize that political science and media courses have some overlapping. That being said, I do have an interest in both politics and the media and am hoping to pursue a career that intertwines the two. I have yet to find a specific job or career to work towards, so where I will end up after college is still unclear to me. It is my goal that by taking different classes and learning from various professors, I will be able to gain insight on what I may enjoy doing in the future. I am always intrigued to see my colleagues work as well as my professors. Seeing what people are passionate about inspires me and even helps me learn more about myself by showing me what interests me and what does not.

By the age of about twelve years old I was starting to develop an interest in broadcasting. I was always the news anchor for our school news show that would air every Friday. So, I always enjoyed looking through articles or developing stories to figure out what I thought the people of the school needed to hear, but also finding a balance of what they would want to hear. Of course this was middle school, so I was no Anderson Cooper, but I still enjoyed the concept of it all.

A few years later I would soon do a week long summer program that would allow me to listen to advice from writers at The Washington Post, meet with aspiring journalists around the world, interview people on the street in New York City, produce my first blog and write my own stories. It was then that I knew I wanted to be involved with media in my future and there is no better place to learn than New York City. I may only be from Long Island which is just a short train ride away, but in my eyes they may as well be different worlds. New York City has so much more to offer, whether its the diversity, inspiration or the stories people have- I find everything to be unique.

My main interests are currently news channels like CNN and late night talk shows including Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. I am interested in how comedians are able to inform viewers about current events while keeping it entertaining. I believe that those shows and their algorithm to give out news is imperative to understanding the media. With a significant amount of people watching those shows to get their news for the day I think people should be focusing on why that is and if it is having any negative affects. With that being said, in the future I hope to be able to inform people about what is going on in a way that they will want to listen to what I am saying, rather than just feeling like they should be listening to the news.
