As I left my dorm building Friday afternoon I hear the door shut behind me as the door next to me opens for others walking into the building. Light tapping sounds from my shoes meeting with the pavement steps can be heard faintly. As I start to walk down the block my ears are instantly greeted with the sound of drilling from the construction site near by. I hear workers yelling to each other as cars are zooming past me to make the yellow light. I also hear the sound of a rap song coming from one of the cars waiting at the now red light. As I continue walking I overhear bits and pieces of various conversations passing by. I hear a bell coming from a dry-cleaners as someone walks out of the door. As I walk past Rite-Aid I almost jumped as the automatic doors loudly slid open since I was walking close to the entrance. I heard the gusty winds around me and the Staples poster above me blowing back and fourth. I continue onwards to the subway entrance and instantly hear the patter of shoes going up the steps. Some fast patters from those who were running out. Multiple beeps are heard throughout the subway as people swipe their metro card into the turnstile. As I wait for the train a roaring sound is heard as the train on the opposite side of the platform approaches. I hear the doors open and various voices from people existing the train. I then hear from a speaker above me that the next train is arriving. Within seconds the train on my side of the platform begins to be heard with a distant rumble that is slowly moving closer. With a screeching halt, the train stops and I hear a tone as the doors of the train open. After a few seconds I hear the announcement that the doors are closing followed by a mellow beep that goes off twice.
Despite that seeming like a short amount of time, I never realized how many sounds we constantly hear. It becomes strange to think about when you realize that almost wherever you go, you are always listening to or hearing something. Even as I type this, I’m now focusing on how loud my keys sound as I push the buttons on my laptop, the doors of my neighbors room closing, the drilling of construction being done below me, a loud truck driving near my building, etc. However, before this assignment I would say I’m in a relatively quiet place, but now it feels as though I’m being consumed by so many different sounds.
