Blog #4- MoMI

The class trip to the MoMI was the first time I went to the museum. While this visit did show me a lot, I felt I got shorted. My group only saw half of one exhibit, so I didn't feel I got to see enough of the museum to discuss it in detail.

My group and I saw the behind the scenes exhibition. This focused on the post-production aspects of film and music. This exhibition included a lot of information about the history of filmmaking, how cameras used to operate and record video, how images were used in a stop-motion animation to give the illusion of a moving image, how sound and image began to be intertwined, how objects are give the illusion of movement, the role lighting plays in a story, and so on. One of my favorite parts of the exhibit was the sound-dubbing studio. This was a studio that allowed us to pick a scene from a selection of movies to record a voiceover a certain actor. It was interesting because it seemed nearly impossible to line up the voice recording with the movement of the actress’ lips. It makes you realize how precise this process is and the time that must be taken to perfect it. Our group tried it about three times to line up the voiceover with the movement of the actress’, but it still didn't seem perfected . I now see myself paying greater attention to the sound of an actors voice to see if I can tell if it was dubbed or if it was done in the original take. Of course these are professionals, so it will be much more precise.

Another aspect I found interesting of the exhibit was changing the audio tracks of certain films. The group chose a film scene from a selection and chose Alfred Hitchcock’s film, Vertigo. First, the computer showed us the scene of the movie without sound. The scene involved two actors and it seemed that one character was in the midst of discovering some type of mystery. However, there was no dialogue in the scene. So, the scene heavily relied on the facial expressions of the actors and the score. After watching the scene in silence we were able to choose from a list of soundtracks to be played over the scene. It was interesting because it emphasized the importance of the music playing to develop the viewers emotion. Playing an upbeat track as compared to a slower track completely alters the emotion being created. This may seem obvious, but at the same time the visuals are still exactly the same. It made me wonder if are emotions are more influenced by audio or visuals. A fun fact our tour guide mentioned was that when something important is revealed in a show or film whether it be Friends or Vertigo, there will usually be a sound in the background. He said to watch for when a character says something important because you'll usually hear a sound such as a door shutting or a bird chirping in the background.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this museum. It truly had so much to offer ranging from the history of film and media to where it is today and where it is going. This definitely will not be my last time going because I now look forward to seeing the new exhibits and installations as they develop.

Wolf of Wall Street- Jordan Meets Donnie

The scene begins with a close up of Jordan, but the camera begins to dolly out so that the viewer can see Donnie walk into the frame. We see Jordan look up to speak to Donnie, but the camera then dollies all the way to a medium shot so that we can see Jordan sitting and Donnie standing.

The yellow lighting in the scene hints that this scene is meant to have taken place several years ago, as well as to create a warm and optimistic feeling. The scene also uses continuity editing because its a conversation happening between two people in real time.

As the the conversation progresses, when Jordan is talking we are viewing him from an over the shoulder shot on Donnie’s righthand side. The camera is also looking down at Jordan, but I believe it is because he is sitting and not because of a power divide.

When Donnie speaks, we view him in an over the shoulder shot, not crossing the imaginary 180 line. When Donnie starts speaking it isn't until about 3 or 4 seconds later that it cuts to his face, this is done so that the conversation appears to flow naturally instead of it jumping to each character.

The music playing in the background appears to be empathetic. This is because it directly matches the emotion of the conversation. Upbeat music is playing while a light-hearted conversation is happening, so it aligns directly.

The scene ends with Donnie quitting his job to work with Jordan. Jordan is in the background while Donnie is at the foreground. The emphasizes Donnie’s size, making him looking physically larger than Jordan, this makes Donnie seem more powerful for quitting his job.

Blog Post #2

As I left my dorm building Friday afternoon I hear the door shut behind me as the door next to me opens for others walking into the building. Light tapping sounds from my shoes meeting with the pavement steps can be heard faintly. As I start to walk down the block my ears are instantly greeted with the sound of drilling from the construction site near by. I hear workers yelling to each other as cars are zooming past me to make the yellow light. I also hear the sound of a rap song coming from one of the cars waiting at the now red light. As I continue walking I overhear bits and pieces of various conversations passing by. I hear a bell coming from a dry-cleaners as someone walks out of the door. As I walk past Rite-Aid I almost jumped as the automatic doors loudly slid open since I was walking close to the entrance. I heard the gusty winds around me and the Staples poster above me blowing back and fourth. I continue onwards to the subway entrance and instantly hear the patter of shoes going up the steps. Some fast patters from those who were running out. Multiple beeps are heard throughout the subway as people swipe their metro card into the turnstile. As I wait for the train a roaring sound is heard as the train on the opposite side of the platform approaches. I hear the doors open and various voices from people existing the train. I then hear from a speaker above me that the next train is arriving. Within seconds the train on my side of the platform begins to be heard with a distant rumble that is slowly moving closer. With a screeching halt, the train stops and I hear a tone as the doors of the train open. After a few seconds I hear the announcement that the doors are closing followed by a mellow beep that goes off twice.
Despite that seeming like a short amount of time, I never realized how many sounds we constantly hear. It becomes strange to think about when you realize that almost wherever you go, you are always listening to or hearing something. Even as I type this, I’m now focusing on how loud my keys sound as I push the buttons on my laptop, the doors of my neighbors room closing, the drilling of construction being done below me, a loud truck driving near my building, etc. However, before this assignment I would say I’m in a relatively quiet place, but now it feels as though I’m being consumed by so many different sounds.

Blog Post #1- Artist Statement

Hello! My name is Colleen Digney and I'm currently a media studies major with a minor in political science at Hunter College. When I first started school I was always set on being a media major, but did not plan on having a minor. As I started taking various media courses I began to realize that political science and media courses have some overlapping. That being said, I do have an interest in both politics and the media and am hoping to pursue a career that intertwines the two. I have yet to find a specific job or career to work towards, so where I will end up after college is still unclear to me. It is my goal that by taking different classes and learning from various professors, I will be able to gain insight on what I may enjoy doing in the future. I am always intrigued to see my colleagues work as well as my professors. Seeing what people are passionate about inspires me and even helps me learn more about myself by showing me what interests me and what does not.

By the age of about twelve years old I was starting to develop an interest in broadcasting. I was always the news anchor for our school news show that would air every Friday. So, I always enjoyed looking through articles or developing stories to figure out what I thought the people of the school needed to hear, but also finding a balance of what they would want to hear. Of course this was middle school, so I was no Anderson Cooper, but I still enjoyed the concept of it all.

A few years later I would soon do a week long summer program that would allow me to listen to advice from writers at The Washington Post, meet with aspiring journalists around the world, interview people on the street in New York City, produce my first blog and write my own stories. It was then that I knew I wanted to be involved with media in my future and there is no better place to learn than New York City. I may only be from Long Island which is just a short train ride away, but in my eyes they may as well be different worlds. New York City has so much more to offer, whether its the diversity, inspiration or the stories people have- I find everything to be unique.

My main interests are currently news channels like CNN and late night talk shows including Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. I am interested in how comedians are able to inform viewers about current events while keeping it entertaining. I believe that those shows and their algorithm to give out news is imperative to understanding the media. With a significant amount of people watching those shows to get their news for the day I think people should be focusing on why that is and if it is having any negative affects. With that being said, in the future I hope to be able to inform people about what is going on in a way that they will want to listen to what I am saying, rather than just feeling like they should be listening to the news.
